Pizza & Ponte Vecchio

After our morning lecture, we split up into a couple of groups for lunch. I ended up getting some pizza with spicy salami on it at a small shop near a piazza. It was fantastic. Similar to the simple panino, pizza only ever has one topping letting you focus entirely on one flavor. Also, it's worth mentioning that all bread in Florence is made without salt due to the high taxes. You can definitely tell when you just eat plain bread, but when the bread is eaten with something on it – in the case of pizza – it's harder to tell. If anything, it lets you focus entirely on the flavor of the topping.

We thought it was going to rain later today, so I ended up taking a lot of pictures after lunch in case I wouldn't be able to take any later on. We went down and crossed the river over the old Ponte Vecchio bridge. This is the oldest bridge in Florence – in fact it was the only one that wasn't bombed during the world war (apparently Hitler liked it). The bridge has an upper passageway that the royalty would take when they did not want to mingle with the commoners below. Today, the bridge is crowded with fine jewelry stores.
