I walk past the Galleria every day on my way to class from my apartment. Aside from Mondays (the museum is closed on Mondays), there is always a long line. Luckily, we received a museum pass from CAPA, so we didn't have to wait as long as the general admission tourists.
The museum is pretty cool – especially the exhibit on musical instruments – but you really go to the Galleria to see David, Michelangelo's iconic sculpture. I had seen a replica of David outside of the Palazzo Vecchio many times, so to be honest, I wasn't expecting this to be a big deal. But I was wrong.
There is a big difference between seventeen feet of beautifully carved marble in front of a large town hall and inside a museum. The statue is massive. And the details that I overlooked on the replica outside are incredible. You can actually see the veins on David's hands and arms, and the muscle definition is all-too realistic. The sculpture is perfection.
Naturally, we couldn't take any pictures inside of the museum, but I have included the statue of David via Wikimedia Commons below. I would also recommend doing a quick Google Search for some different angles and close-ups.
